Luc Pierard is honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Liège, Belgium and was Head of the Department of Cardiology of the University Hospital Sart Tilman in Liège from 2002 to 2017. He was the first to demonstrate the utility of dobutamine stress echocardiography for identifying myocardial viability and ischemia and to use exercise echocardiography in valvular heart diseases. He was President of the Belgian Society of Cardiology and had several positions in the European Society of Cardiology: he chaired the Working Group on Echocardiography and is currently chairperson of the ESC Council in Valvular Heart Disease. He is Editor-in-Chief of Acta Cardiologica and Senior Associate Editor of the EHJ Cardiovascular Imaging. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles (many on valvular heart disease) and more than 50 book chapters.
This book provides a state-of-the-art description of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of valvular heart disease (VHD). With an aging population, the incidence and complexity of VHD has markedly increased and the introduction of transcatheter valve therapies have revolutionized the management of these frequent and serious cardiovascular diseases. The development of percutaneous valve interventions has revolutionized the management of VHD (or has dramatically changed its management)
