Heart failure is a disease of vast proportions resulting in high morbidity and mortality. The economic impact of this disease is staggering as well, as demonstrated by the 5 million patients with heart failure whose annual outpatient care is approximately USD20 billion. This textbook reflects this true collaboration of specialists. It will provide the current understanding of this complex disease, as well as standard and emerging therapies to improve both the quality and quantity of life for our patients. Basic epidemiology, disease prevention, and emerging drug therapies will be reviewed, but importantly it will reflect the much broader spectrum of treatment strategies that now includes surgical and electrophysiologic approaches. The textbook is liberally supplemented with graphic illustrations, clinical observations regarding patient care, and expertise reflecting the team approach to the care of these complex patients, which includes the social, nursing, and ethical aspects of care.
