High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology it's been commonly used for the long-distance, bulk power transfer in modern power systems. With the new advancements in technology HVDC is ready to change its conventional position on the periphery of alternating current (AC) grids to a central role. This technology have potential to facilitate the European Super-Grid aims to assist the integration of large-scale renewable energy and assure a reliable interconnection between national grids. This paper investigates HVDC links development in correlation with renewable energy integration and the need of increasing security of supply by joining local grids into a Pan-European network. The research focus on collecting data that indicates the main technology used in the future structure of European Super-Grid, and therefore being able to answer the question: Will HVDC transmission become the backbone of European Super-Grid?
