In the last decade, several studies have been produced that identified the human intestinal microbial population as one of the arms of the Microbiome project and later more studies that associated specific populations of microorganisms with certain functions and metabolic processes in the body, among the various strands of study we highlight here the influence of the microbiota on the process of obesity and weight loss and more recently with depression and mood symptoms. The dietary pattern is the most determinant factor in defining the composition and diversity of the intestinal microbiota, and its imbalance contributes to increased risk of chronic inflammatory diseases. This is a systematic review of the literature on the implications of the human intestinal microbiota in the genesis of obesity, in the weight loss process, and in depression, based on articles selected from the best international databases.
