Water source have always been a precious commodity for human life. Groundwater is used for domestic supply, industries and agriculture in most parts of the world as it is a replenishable resource and has inherent advantages over surface water. There has been a tremendous increase in the demand for fresh water due to growth in population the rapid growth of urban areas has affected the ground water quality due to over exploitation resources and improper waste disposal practices. The study area Muthupet, this coming under Thiruvarur district, Tamilnadu. Totally seventy two groundwater samples collected season wise (Postmonsoon, summer and Premonsoon seasons) and were analyzed, compared with WHO and BIS. The type of water that predominated in the study area was assessed based on hydrochemcial facies. Besides, suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation was evaluated based on SAR and SSP, and the USSL, further water classified Piper and Gibbs diagram also present. The results indicate that few wells are partially suitable for drinking purposes with remaining are suitable for domestic and irrigation purpose.
