A central issue of seismology today is the assimilation of the ever-increasing seismic waveform recordings collected by modern broadband instruments to improve models of the seismic source that generates seismic waves and the geological structure through which seismic waves propagate. In regions such as Southern California, preliminary 3D Earth structure models are already available, and efficient numerical methods have been developed for simulating 3D seismic wave propagation. In this book we describe a unified, full-physics inversion procedure that utilizes these capabilities to iteratively improve 3D Earth structure models in conjunction with models of rupture processes during earthquakes. The methodology developed in this book has the potential to substantially enhance the accuracy and resolution of models of the Earth's interior and earthquake rupture processes and should be useful to professionals in seismology and solid-Earth geophysics.
