N. Tocci writes that diplomacy is "a significant role in the process of constructing peace, not just in the European Union, but also in the broader European area" in his book "Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution in the European Union," published in 2007. Moreover, he claims, "diplomacy is vital in the process of conflict resolution and in the handling of crises" (Tocci, 2007). This is because diplomatic channels enable for governments to speak with one another in a way that is not aggressive, so facilitating the peaceful settlement of issues. In addition, governments may work together and coordinate their responses via diplomacy.
