This book discusses the displacement of urban populations, inequality, and poverty in three cities in South Asia—Colombo, Jaffna in Sri Lanka, and Kochi in India. It focuses on the long-term effect resettlement and relocation has on the lives and livelihoods of urban internal displacement of populations (IDPs) primarily from urban poor classes. It also discusses the concerns faced by the displacement in post-war Sri Lanka. It examines the impacts of conflict on poverty and recovery in peri-urban settings. It emphasizes the role of agency of urban IDPs in strengthening their own well-being. It draws attention to how the agency of urban IDPs is compromised by the displacement processes and the weak local level governance structures in the cities. The book is intended for researchers, graduate students, and teachers of Geography, Social Policy, Refugees and Migration Studies, History, International Development, Urban Studies, and South Asian Studies.

Rajith W. D. Lakshman is Research Officer at the Cities Cluster at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), the University of Sussex. He is Financial Economist by training with a Ph.D. (University of Melbourne, Australia) focused on stock market interlinkages. His subsequent work, however, has mainly focused on conflict, poverty, and development. At IDS, he is also involved in a DfID-funded well-being study in South Asian cities and had led an IDRC funded three-year project on urban violence which the proposed book is based on. His work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals (e.g., World Development; Journal of Refugee Studies; and Disasters) and as chapters in book published by international publishers. He has reviewed papers for several international journals and been in the editorial board of Migration and Development.

S. Irudaya Rajan is Professor at the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Kerala. He is Chair of the KNOMAD thematic group on Internal Migration and Urbanization managed by the World Bank. With more than three decades of research experience at CDS, he has coordinated eight migration surveys in Kerala since 1998 (with K C Zachariah) and conducted migration surveys in Goa (2008), Punjab (2011), and Tamil Nadu (2015). He is Editor of two Routledge series, India Migration Report (since 2010) and South Asia Migration Report (since 2017). He works closely with the Ministry of External Affairs (erstwhile Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs), Government of India, and Department of Non-Resident Keralite Affairs, Government of Kerala. He is also Elected Chairman for the International Institute of Migration and Development. He has published extensively in national and international journals on social, economic, and demographic implications of international migration.
