The ecclesiastical landscape has changed drastically since I first wrote this booklet in 1998. While the Christian popular culture still idolizes celebrity pastors, and throngs of people are enamored by the neon lights of the megachurch, the typical pastor on the front lines of ministry no longer holds the esteem of the general population like he once did. Add to this shift in attitude the fact that a growing number of pastors are bi-vocational, working a "secular" job in addition to leading a church, it is no wonder that today's pastor is stretched beyond reason, often resulting in burnout, disillusionment, and a sense of abandonment. Many people will be uncomfortable with this booklet. It cuts to the chase and advocates, unequivocally, for the pastor. This little work is meant for the person who genuinely wants to help their pastor, has a deep and sincere love for him, and desires for him to feel the appreciation that he deserves. If you are someone who views yourself as the pastor's "boss," or are suspicious of pastors, you probably won't like what you read. I am currently a bi-vocational pastor myself, leading a very small congregation I founded in 2005. But I wrote this booklet when I was a fulltime pastor, and have chosen to retain that sense throughout this booklet. Also, I am a very blessed pastor. Each of my previous congregations treated me well, and my current flock is a joy to serve. It is my prayer that this work will help other Christians treat their pastor as well as my churches have treated me.
