Achieving proficient performance is a central goal inlearning, and educators often set expectations for what forms itshould take. But strategies need to be learned in order for studentsto complete the journey to proficient performance, and effectiveteaching of these skills is often given much less attention. The resultis that teachers easily overlook or minimize the significance ofdeficiencies in students'' ability to use appropriate learningstrategies, and instead "teach to the test." Piano practice is one domainwithin which factors that affect performance proficiency can be assessed.The practice strategies used by intermediate piano students havingdifferent learning styles are identified and assessed byexternal examiners. Relationships that exist between strategies used inpractice and other areas of learning are investigated, as well asto the effects of attitude, motivation, and ownership of learning onpractice. This investigation should be useful to educators andstudents interested in a case study of the influence of formativelearning strategies on proficient performance.
