Expansive soils have been a challenge for construction due to their behavioral change under moisture fluctuation. The proper remedial measure targets to avoid their undesirable property during and after construction. This paper provides essential characteristics of these type of soils found in the horn of Africa, Ethiopia. The study area is located on the heart of the rift valley in the southern part of the same country.

Bantayehu Uba has received BSc and MSc degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Engineering) from Mekelle and Addis Ababa Universitiy, respectively in Ethiopia. Presently, he is a Lecturer in School of Civil Engineering, Hawassa University. He has worked with contractor and consulting private firms in road and building construction.
