Chung Ling does not let detractors divert his attention or undermine his determination to achieve his goals even though his family circumstances are bleak. These realities prepare him for the hard way he has to follow, perceiving that his road to success is limited. His ragged path is dangerous and full of high hurdles and obstacles which quite often disheartens him. Yet, at crucial moments in his life he finds unexpected help. Early in his childhood, his grandmother makes him aware of fundamental precepts which are contained in four little books. When Chung learned to read she handed them to him, admonishing him to show them to nobody because his future might be jeopardized. These principles occasionally land him in trouble. In his early teens five envious bullies who could not stand Chung's better performance at school decided to give him a lesson. A girl saves him from their vicious beating which nearly killed him. Her martial art technique proves too much for these bullies and one by one they leave whilst attempting to help Chung get up. This chance meeting results in friendship and mutual liking; Chung starts to follow her father's gym programme to be near her but a series of events make him realise that his priority is fulfilment of his aims. Emotional feelings had to be postponed. When he enters University, Chung comes across another equally lovely girl who is instrumental in guiding him in his academic life. Chung likes her; he is ambivalent however and ends up with a a divided heart, unable to choose between the two girls. His final decision leads him to unexpected areas.
