Buffaloes are an integral and indispensable part of our agriculture system as evident from three times higher population growth in last five decades as compared to cattle. Moreover, buffalo is still predominant milk producer as it contributes 55 per cent of total milk production in the country. For providing sufficient amount of nutrients in the form of milk and milk products to the masses of our country, it is required to improve milk productivity per animal. Therefore, it is of paramount important to improve the production potential of our indigenous stock, to cope up with the growing demand of milk and milk products for ever increasing population of our country. For bringing about overall genetic improvement in production, reproduction and growth traits of a breed, the selection of female has limited scope due to lack of sufficient replacement stock. On the other hand, very intensive selection can be practiced in case of males as few males are required for breeding purpose. Hence, best way to enhance the genetic potential of animal is to use proven sires in subsequent generations to transmit superior genetic potential for milk production.
