What is Europe? The much-vaunted community of values? The Christian West? Or just a continent? Whether viewed as a geographical entity or a political community, Europe is always also a construct of mental boundaries. The invocation of different images of Europe often serves strategic purposes: if people feel threatened by Islam, the image of Europe as the Christian West is used to create a distinction. If Brexit is imminent, the construct of Europe as an economic power is activated. Which image of Europe is referred to therefore depends crucially on the context and the current discourse. The media play an important role in this. They convey certain images of Europe and thus achieve a wide reach. For this reason, the author of this book conducted interviews with editors of public television stations. The journalists interviewed all work on programs that deal with Europe. In the interviews, the editors talk about what Europe means to them and which facets of Europe they convey to viewers in their programs.
