This dissertation contains three essays focused onmacroeconomic issues in the Commonwealth IndependentStates (CIS). Two essays, which analyse recentmonetary and inflation issues in the CIS, contributeto empirical studies in the area of monetaryeconomics of countries under transition. The thirdessay explores, formally and empirically, a linkbetween labor market regulations and internationaltrade and proposes a possible area of tradespecialization for a number of countries as, forexample, landlocked economies in Central Asia (CA).The important theoretical point to be gained fromthis essay is that there are very clear reasons forinternational trade between similar or identicalcountries, even between markets that are competitive.Namely, the rational for international trade can bebased on, apart from the standard concept ofdifferences in productivities, differences in labormarket regulations among countries.
