Game theory has recently become an indispensable toolin environmental and resource economics because manyof the typical features of environmental problems canbe most adequately handled by means of game theoreticnotions and models. Game theory provides powerful newtools to analyze externalities that occur in thecontext of the management of natural resource assets. This book is a collection of essays in game theoryand its applications in analyzing environmentalresource problems and their management. In this book,a resource problem refers to situations characterizedby inefficient use of a resource, while resourcemanagement is defined as the design of resourceallocation mechanisms, which leads to the efficientuse of the resource. The major focus of the essays ingame theory (Chapters 3, 4 and 5) is related tocoalitional games, whereas the main issue ofapplications (Chapters 6 and 7) is related tointernational fisheries management in the context ofthe 1995 United Nations Agreement on theImplementation of the UN Convention on the Law of theSea. The five essays are connected by the notion of"fair" solution applied to achieve efficient use ofthe resource.
