The play is about two stories. In the past, Sanders sought a wife; Martha sought a single life. Martha cheated on Sanders. Sanders was no longer able to trust her. She could not help being unfaithful and every time she was it hurt her. Throughout the play, Martha seeks out the meaning of love while Sanders seeks the meaning of life after serving a prison sentence. Another thing, a second theme running parallel to the theme of love is the theme of acting on what you believe in no matter the consequences. Martha also has parents who do not like the boyfriend, and she must decide between him and her parents. This is also a play about Jonelle and the lives of people she was unintentionally mean to. His story is a typical story about a woman who falls in love, gets married, has kids, and works at a white collar job. The people she inadvertently hurts are her sister who is pressured into being like her and her daughter who is also pressured to be like her.
