In mobile communications, nearby or proximity users can communicate with each other directly without the need of communicating through Base Station. This is called Device-to- Device (D2D) communications. D2D takes advantage of the physical proximity of communication devices and enables direct communications between devices. The proximity of devices may allow for extremely high bit rates, low delays, and low power consumption. This D2D communication has several benefits like improving spectral efficiency, network capacity and energy efficiency. However, D2D communication can generate interference which may lead to performance decrease of D2D and cellular communications. A strategy to apply D2D communication in a cellular network and to calculate the energy efficiency though throughput is presented in the dissertation report. The report starts with the need of Device-to-Device Communication in cellular communication and the basics of Device-to-Device Communication are covered. The focus mainly relies on the formation of groups for the devices or user and the energy efficiency of such groups which are formed.
