In the present research the energy consumption of an institutional building is minimized by considering energy saving alternatives, followed by energy simulation in eQUEST software, based on the whole building performance method, as a way to implement an environmental friendly technology that can reduce the impact in several areas such as saving energy, reducing CO2 emissions, reducing materials consumption, reducing mercury consumption, and recycling issue of a building. The existing institutional building considered for annual energy analysis is further designed using ECBC User Guide and ASHRAE Standard 90.1, an energy conservation code. After analyzing the output results of three respective cases, ECBC design building is found to be more energy efficient, as it consumes 10% lesser energy than the existing institutional building and 0.6% lesser than the ASHRAE building. The design buildings are rated using GRIHA, a green building rating system. By scoring 66 points in GRIHA rating system, designed buildings are rated as GRIHA 2-Star Building. At last suggestions are provided for the improvement of GRIHA rating.
