He returns to the hospital the next morning only to find that she has lapsed into a coma. He blames himself for the accident. He believes that if he had been more responsive to her needs she never would have left and there wouldn't have been an accident. Over the last year as Greg worked closely with Rita Duncan, his administrative assistant, he didn't realize how much he had come to rely on her and that he had a latent affection for her. These feelings become evident when she leaves the company after a misunderstanding with him and another employee. Learning that the employee is devious and has fed him erroneous information about Rita, Greg goes looking for her. When he is unable to find her he feels a sense of helplessness and failure. Gail's coma and losing Rita is the last straw and he plunges down a path of self destruction. Waking up in the hospital after a near fatal alcohol overdose, Greg realizes that he must try to make sense of his feelings about Gail and Rita. As he attempts to do that he learns a valuable lesson about feelings and unconditional love.
