A vigorous debate as to which educational approachesto educating youth about sexual health would be mosteffective is ongoing in the U.S., as well asworldwide. A majority of adults and teens agree thatschools should give teens a strong message that theyshould abstain from sex until they are at least outof high school (National Campaign to Prevent TeenPregnancy, 2003), yet there is uncertainty as towhether programs that have a strong abstinencemessage are effective in delaying teen sexualinvolvement(Hymowitz, 2003; Manlove, Papillo,&Ikramullah, 2004). This study compares the effect of anabstinence-centered sexual health multimediapresentation based on the Health Beliefs modelemphasizing the consequences of teen sexual behavioron teens attitudes and intentions with the impact ofa presentation based on a Character Education modelthat asserts norms of healthy sexual behaviors. Italso compares the effects of a multimedia programbased on cognitive flexibility theory with theeffects of a multimedia program that utilizes atraditional instructive, directive approach.
