This book examines the breakdown of this relationship in the 1950 and 1960s. JOHN SINGLETON is Senior Lecturer in Economic History at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His previous books are Lancashire on the Scrapheap: the Cotton Industry, 1945-70, The World Textile Industry, and co-edited with R.M.Milward, The Political Economy of Nationalisation in Britain 1920-1950.

PAUL L. ROBERTSON is Professor of Management at the University of Wollongong in Australia. Among his previous publications are The British Shipbuilding Industry, 1870-1914 (co-editor Sidney Pollard), and Firms, Markets and Economic Change: A Dynamic Theory of Business Institutions (co-editor R.N.Langlois).
