Infertility Definition*Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to bring pregnancy to term after a year of unprotected sexual intercourse. According to the WHO 8-10% of couples experience infertility, which translates to 80-100 million people. Treatment with gonadotropins and clomiphene citrate (CC) became available in 1961. The purpose of this chapter is to overview the development, structure, and mode of action of treatments for ovulation induction (OI) and controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for assisted reproductive techniques (ARTS).Scale of the Infertility Problem * For more than 30 years, human menopausal gonadotropins (HMG) have been applied in the treatment of human infertility. Clinical implications include ovulation induction in clomiphene resistant an ovulatory women and ovarian stimulation in assisted reproduction techniques. During the last decade there has been substantial increase in the use of infertility drugs, primarily regimens incorporating urinary gonadotropins.
