Designing a drivetrain is a highly complex engineering task. It always starts with defining what technological process has to be carried out, and at what speed it has to be performed. If we talk about a specialized task, we have to design even the machine, itself; but if we are faced with a routine task, an existing machine can be chosen from a product catalogue. Commonly the next step is choosing the required prime mover, by taking the parameters of the machinery into consideration. Afterwards we design the transmission machinery and its associated parts with respect to the special requirements of the drivetrain, namely stable vibrating or vibration free, smooth operation. This process is made up of several consecutive steps, such as preliminary construction, stressing the parts, dynamic modelling the drivetrain in order to determining the excitation and natural frequencies. The knowledge required for designing an optimized drivetrain may be acquired from several subjects: statics, stress analysis, dynamics, machine elements, machine construction etc. The book provides a uniform engineering view for students and mechanical engineers to design machine groups.
