The interpretations ascribed to the German Revolution of 1918-19 have undergone significant changes over time. It has been viewed alternatively as a "stab in the back" of the German army and treason against the Fatherland to an event that prevented the rise of Bolshevism and as a missed opportunity for democratization. This study documents for the very first time German historiography concerning the Revolution over a period of nearly 100 years.
