Adsorption is the most widely used unitary operation in the removal of dyes, flavors, odors and purification of wastewater by virtue of its simplicity of design, ease of operation and insensitivity to toxic substances. This book is the result of an undergraduate thesis in Chemical Engineering and proposes: first, the design, construction and commissioning of a laboratory-scale two-column adsorption unit with fixed beds of granular activated carbon for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. Secondly, to review the basic theory of fixed bed adsorption through the study of adsorption systems, in order to establish a generalized design strategy(ies) that will constitute a solid premise to approach the study of adsorption as a unitary operation or separation method in Chemical Engineering studies.
