Gottfried Keller, geb. 1819 in Zürich, gest. 1890, wuchs in bescheidenen Verhältnissen auf. Nachdem er wegen eines Streichs die Schule verlassen musste, lernte er das Zeichnen und begann zu schreiben. Im Jahr 1840 konnte er, unterstützt von seiner Mutter, ein Studium an der Münchner Kunstakademie beginnen, welches er aber nicht abschloss. 1842 kam er zurück nach Zürich. Stipendien und wiederum die finanzielle Unterstützung der Mutter ermöglichten ihm Aufenthalte in Heidelberg und Berlin, wo einige seiner bedeutendsten Werke entstanden. Er kehrte 1855 zurück zu seiner Mutter nach Zürich und wurde hier im Jahr 1861 zum Stadtschreiber. Dieses Amt übte er aus bis 1876, danach beanspruchte sein literarisches Arbeiten seine ganze Zeit. Gottfried Keller starb im Jahr 1890 in seiner Heimatstadt Zürich.
