This is the second year I have used this book and will continue to use it in the foreseeable future. It is the best analysis of the state of democracy in Latin America. I would indeed recommend it to anyone teaching a course on Latin America with at least some focus on democracy. I would describe it as-the best book on democracy in Latin America. I would also add that it is a very accessible text for undergraduates that is certain to spark conversations in the classroom.

Peter H. Smith is Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Simón Bol'ivar Professor of Latin American Studies at the University of California, San Diego. A former president of the Latin American Studies Association, he is the author of more than twenty books, including Talons of the Eagle: Latin America, the United States, and the World 4e (OUP, 2013) and coauthor of Modern Latin America 8e (OUP, 2014). His works have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.; Cameron Sells is a PhD student in Political Science at the University of California, San Diego.
