The objective of this research was to analyse the discourse of federal deputies from the Workers' Party on the macroeconomic policies that influenced the development of Brazilian industry during the 1990s and 2000s. To this end, we outlined the main policies that characterised the import substitution model, as well as the state of the art of Brazilian industry after the adoption of macroeconomic reforms resulting from the Washington Consensus. After discussing the phenomenon of early deindustrialisation, we presented the analytical and methodological assumptions that underpinned the research. Finally, we analyse the discourse of Workers' Party parliamentarians in two periods, first during the 1990s, based on the structural transformations implemented by the Collor and Fernando Henrique Cardoso governments. The second period of the investigation covered the two terms of the Lula government.
