Blood flow through a defective bileaflet mechanicalheart valve was modeled using steady and pulsatileblood flow conditions under several flow andmalfunction severity conditions. The calculationsused Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations withNewtonian blood properties. The results showed thatthe flow upstream and downstream of the defectivevalve is highly influenced by malfunction severityand this resulted in a misleading improvement in thecorrelation between simulated Dopplerechocardiographic and catheter transvalvular pressuregradients. In this study, two potential non-invasiveparameters were proposed using Dopplerechocardiography and phase contrast magneticresonance imaging, for an early detection ofmechanical heart valve malfunction. Finally, therelation between the coherent structures downstreamof the valve and the valve malfunction was shown andthe significant impact of valve malfunction onplatelet activation and as a consequence, on thrombusformation was also shown.
