Mario Melletti is an Italian freelance wildlife biologist and a member of the African Buffalo Initiative Group and Wild Pig Specialist Group, both part of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. During his PhD studies, he was affiliated with the Department of Animal and Human Biology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy, and with the Department of Conservation Biology of the Estación Biólogica de Doñana (CSIC-EBD) Seville, Spain. For the past 10 years he has been researching the ecology and behaviour of the forest buffalo in Central Africa. Mario has also studied a number of other large mammals and has been involved in several projects and surveys on mammals and birds in Africa and Europe, working in several African countries including Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. He is the editor of of several books on large mammal conservation and management and has authored about 60 scientific publications.


Stefano Focardi is senior researcher at the Institute for Complex Systems of the CNR in Florence, Italy, where he leads the large mammal research team. Furthermore, he is professor of Vertebrate Zoology at the University of Florence, and Invited Professor at the University of Lyon, France. Moreover, he will also lead a collaboration with INRA in Toulouse, France. He authored 110 scientific articles and 26 documents on environmental management. He is also scientific coordinator of EUROBOAR, a European organization for research on the biology of wild boar, and an active member of the EURODEER INITIATIVE. He is a specialist in the biology of roe deer and fallow deer and has organized several international meetings on these two cervid species. His current research interests include ungulate demography, avian and mammalian movement ecology and population assessment.
