Art historian Wiley Jones enjoys a mundane existence in the protective cocoon of academia. Surrounded by volumes of manuscripts and dusty artifacts, her carefully orchestrated life is thrown into chaos when she is encouraged to join an art recovery project based in Croatia. The moment she and her unwanted protector, undercover FBI agent Scott McCormick leave Chicago they quickly find themselves immersed in a shadowy world of dead ends and misdirection. Scott enjoys the thrill of the chase as it relates to both Wiley and their ensuing investigation. On the surface it appears a cache of pre-World War II art and artifacts have been uncovered during the demolition of an old school. But as Wiley and Scott dig deeper they soon realize that many of the pieces in the collection don't belong. Rather that they appear to have been recently added to the find. When Frank Hamilton the current project director winds up dead, they find themselves in a race against the clock to unwind the mystery before they are either forced to leave the country or wind up dead themselves. As they struggle to sort through the confusion surrounding the art work and their relationship they come to realize that the only safe harbor may be each other and that leaves far more at risk than they thought.
