Dietmar Elger studierte Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte und Literaturwissenschaften an der Universität Hamburg. 1984/85 leitete er das Atelier von Gerhard Richter und bearbeitete das Werkverzeichnis des Künstlers. Von 1989 bis 2006 war er Kustos für Malerei und Plastik am Sprengel Museum Hannover. Er organisierte zahlreiche Ausstellungen zur modernen und zeitgenössischen Kunst. Seit 2006 ist er Leiter des Gerhard Richter Archivs an den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Bei TASCHEN veröffentlichte er Expressionismus, Dadaismus und Abstrakte Kunst.
