Current treatment against leishmaniasis is solely based on chemotherapy and vaccination remains an alternative for the prevention and control of this dreadful parasitic disease. Extensive proof from animal experimental models indicates that a robust protection can be conferred by immunization with defined subunit vaccines or live-attenuated strains of Leishmania. However, to date, no such vaccine is on hand in spite of substantial efforts. This current study focuses on recent findings in anti-leishmania vaccine field and highlights current difficulties facing vaccine development and its implementation.
