John Ridley is a technical translator in Northtown, endeavouring to raise his family in the decadent society of post 1960''s Britain. Feeling powerless, betrayed by a false liberalism which always sides with the corrupters, he is outraged when his young daughter is in danger of becoming pregnant. Venting his anger upon the nightclub which she has begun to frequent, he retaliates in dramatic fashion. Despite his precautions, he fears arrest, or worse still, criminal retribution against his family. Therefore he decides to flee, seeking refuge in a distant part of France well known to him, where he hopes to evade detection and rebuild his life. This novel analyses the malaise of modern Britain.
