The rapid self-configuration, ease of deployment andsmall cost of components motivate the popularity ofwireless sensor networks, the recent interestgenerated by wireless Radio Frequency Identifier(RFID) systems and their envisioned integration. While the autonomous operation and random deploymentof components determine the low set up cost of suchsystems, they also become sources of problems. Thisthesis studies the problem of extending the networklifetime of sensor and RFID systems by defining anddetecting redundant components whose simultaneousdeactivation maintains the initial network coverage.First, we present efficient distributed algorithmsfor computing and maintaining solutions for theredundant sensor elimination problem. Second, westudy three problems in dense RFID deployments, thereader collision avoidance problem, the optimal tagreporting problem and the optimal tag coverageproblem. We propose a distributed and localizedRedundant Reader Elimination (RRE) algorithm thataddresses these problems. We rigorously analyze theperformance and accuracy of all our contributions andprovide results from elaborate simulations for a widerange of system parameters.
