Maize cultivation in developing regions has a number of peculiarities, starting with the genotypes used, which are usually creole or open-pollinated varieties. Another peculiarity is the cultivation systems used, which, in order to make better use of the area, mainly by small producers, use intercropping between different species. In the Northeast of Brazil, the maize and bean intercropping system is predominant, due to the tradition of the producers, the good value of the products on the market, greater production security and a reduction in the use of nitrogen fertilizers. The use of intercropping as a cropping system has caused disagreements as some researchers argue that intercropping decreases the productivity of the main crop. This brings into question some factors such as population density and, above all, the use of improved varieties, which increase the productivity of maize and also increase the productivity of the secondary crop, which in this case is beans. This book is aimed at farmers and researchers in the agricultural sciences.
