This volume complements Ruth Spalding's edition of The Diary of Bulstrode Whitelocke, 1605-1675. Many entries--including Whitelocke's manuscripts at Longleat as well as new material from his letters--shed new light on the politics of the period, as well as on economic and social developments. Items include Sir John Holland's frank comments on Charles I's demeanor at Holdenby Manor, the key to the number code sent by Secretary of State John Thurloe to Whitelocke in Sweden, and a letter written by Whitelocke to Cromwell using secret ink. Spalding has assembled a great number of biographical details that elucidate the diary references and has worked into this framework new material from Whitelocke's letters.

Even more obviously than the `Diary' itself, this excellent supporting volume is a work of reference...Dr. Ruth Spalding has devoted a large part of her working life to him, and if he still lacks impact it is not for the absence of any skill or effort on her part.
