This research focuses on the concepts of femalefreedom, independence, liberty, and a feminine idealwithin Western-European, American, and Ukrainiantraditions. The study explores the works of Friedan,Elshtain, Steinem, de Beauvoir, Kobrynska,Kobylianska, and Ukrainka. While Westernwomen-centered thinkers prioritized economic, social, and political issues with regard to womans positionin the public and private realms, Ukrainian femalewriters, in contrast, drew extensively from theirnational stories, ancient and modern. Christianityand spiritual ideals had a much stronger influence onUkrainian writers than political or economictheories. "Feminists despite themselves," theseUkrainian authors embodied the characters that theycreated in their radical and transformational beliefsand actions. Both traditions share similar concernswith the dilemmas facing contemporary women in theirrespective societies. Common dangers and coststhreaten womans full liberation under a globalmarket economy where male privilege remainsentrenched. Without full participation of women indecision-making processes, democracy for women can beeroded in the West and stifled in Ukraine.
