Folktales have their meanings and messages to every generation - depending on the age and the social and cultural background of the audience - but they are always valid. Originally tales were told not only to children or to the young but they were to enchant every age group, whole populations living together. What people feared the most or what they dreamed about became embodied in their stories mixed with social and cultural rules and expectations. From generation to generation from mouth to mouth stories were passed on in oral form. With the history of mankind, with the history of its lifestyle did the folktale form till it took on all what is characteristic of a folktale today. Do tales have any significance in the 21st century? What meanings can folktales have to our generations? Comparing English and Hungarian fairy tales from the aspect of the protagonists genders, my point is not only to analyse but to highlight their values and meanings.
