The conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the environments where this diversity originated or is being used, are issues which are high on the policy agenda. As part of efforts to implement this in situ conservation strategy, development organizations have recently created a common methodology referred to as community biodiversity management (CBM). CBM empowers communities to manage and take informed decisions and thus contribute to the conservation and use of agrobiodiversity; by this means, they also exercise their farmers rights.
This book is the first to set out a clear overview of CBM, as an approach to meet social, economic and environmental change. CBM is shown to be a key strategy contributing to the enhancement of resilience of farming communities and the conservation of plant genetic resources. The authors present concepts, theories, methodology and practices, combined with case studies primarily from Brazil, India, Ethiopia, France and Nepal. Contributors include farmers, leaders of farmers organizations, professionals from development organizations, and scientists. The book provides an inspiration to all concerned with agrobiodiversity conservation. It also contributes ideas for the implementation of farmers rights and the development of strategies that support farming communities to respond to socio-environmental, including climate, change. This book illustrates the efforts of communities to cope with change while using diversity and engaging in learning processes. It links those grassroots efforts to debates in policy arenas as a means to respond to the unpredictable changes people face in sustaining their livelihoods.
