The uses of space as well as memorial cultures in a spatial context have attracted a particular interest. The contributions to the present volume, predominantly written in English, engage with this spatial turn . They focus especially on the functions of the city (e.g. market, commerce) and city development, on the city space and its representation, on the city and its hinterland , and on the development of urban districts. These topics will be discussed with reference to European cities in the medieval and the modern periods. Dr. Robert Simunek ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Historischen Institut der Akademie der Wissenschaften, Prag, Abteilung für mittelalterliche Geschichte und historische Geographie. Paul Niedermaier ist korrespondierendes Mitglied der Rumänischen Akademie, Direktor des Forschungsinstituts für Geisteswissenschaften in Hermannstadt und Professor an der dortigen Universität. Ferdinand Opll ist Direktor des Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchivs i. R. und tit. ao. Univ.-Prof. für Mittelalterliche Geschichte und Historische Hilfswissenschaften an der Universität Wien. Mittelalterliche und frühneuzeitliche Geschichte, vergleichende Stadtgeschichte und Kartographiegeschichte, insbesondere aber die Geschichte Wiens sind Schwerpunkte seiner wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit. Roman Czaja ist Professor für mittelalterliche Geschichte an der Universität Torun, Polen. Michel Pauly ist Professor für transnationale Luxemburger Geschichte an der Universität Luxemburg. Martin Scheutz ist ao. Professor am Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung der Universität Wien.
