One reason for its being an important book is that it explores one of the major tensions in cognitive delveopmental research...This book not only makes a substantial and provocative contribution to the research literature but it is ideal for undergraduate teaching and can profitably be read by preschool teachers and interested parents. For the transparent presentation of data and the judicious discussion of competing theories it can hardly be bettered.
