Challenging nuclearism argues that the discourses and policies of the nuclear weapon states are now coming under unprecedented scrutiny, as a result of the 'Humanitarian Initiative' and the new UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Nuclear states have long been able to portray their possession of these weapons as 'normal' and they have been able to resist any serious challenges to the global nuclear order they have created and upheld, using the practices and discourses of nuclearism. But nuclearism has now been discredited, as the new treaty introduces a legal prohibition of nuclear weapons based on international humanitarian law. The treaty faces several challenges in the coming years, but it is nevertheless a landmark agreement and will place significant pressure on those states that insist on keeping nuclear weapons. -- .
