William C. Roberts, MD, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 11, 1932. He graduated from Southern Methodist University and Emory University School of Medicine. He did his training in internal medicine at the Boston City Hospital and at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and his training in pathology at the National Institutes of Health. From July 1964 to March 1993, he was Chief of Pathology at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. He published more than 1,700 articles, authored or edited 31 books, and lectured in over 2,200 cities worldwide. He contributed information on many cardiovascular conditions. During the past 44 years, Dr. Roberts had been program director for the Williamsburg Conference on Heart Disease held every December in Williamsburg, Virginia. The American College of Cardiology Foundation has sponsored this conference for 30 years. Since March 1993, Dr. Roberts had been the executive director of the Baylor Heart and Vascular Institute at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He was also the editor-in-chief of the Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings and Dean of the A. Webb Roberts Center for Continuing Medical Education at Baylor Scott & White Health. He had been the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Cardiology since June 1982. He received many honors including the 1978 Gifted Teacher Award from The American College of Cardiology; the 1983 College Medalist Award of the American College of Chest Physicians; the Public Health Service Commendation Medal in 1979; the 1984 Richard and Hilda Rosenthal Foundation Award from the Council of Cardiology of the American Heart Association; an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Far Eastern University, Manila, Philippines in 1995; the designation of Master from The American College of Cardiology in 2004, the Lifetime Achievement Award of The American College of Cardiology in 2016; and the Lifetime Achievement Award for D’s CEO’s Excellence in Healthcare Awards in 2021.
Sadly, Dr. William C. Roberts passed away in June 2023 at the age of 90, just as this book series went into production.
