Recurrent miscarriage is defined as 3 or more consecutive pregnancy losses before 20 weeks of gestation. It affects 5% of pregnancies, and, unfortunately, most of the cases are of unknown causes. Inherited thrombophilias have been postulated as an etiology, with a large and contradictory literature addressing their link to recurrent spontaneous miscarriage. This manuscript contains a review of this literature, and the retrospective case control study done by my colleagues and I on a cohort of the Lebanese population, aiming to find weather or not there is an association of 12 different thrombophilia genes with recurrent pregnancy loss, weather this association is mono or multi-genetic, and weather there are other factors, such as life style habits or environmental factors, that could increase, or decrease the risk of recurrent pregnancy loss.
