This is the first book to explore the urban and planning history of cities across Central and South-eastern Europe against a background of rising nationalism. Introductory chapters outline the political history of the area, how the developments in the different countries were interconnected and how the capital cities of each independent country or growing national movement were linked to these developments. Fourteen studies of individual cities describes their planning, urban design and architecture. The role of different actors and any conflicts between them is analysed as are those between different ethnic or national groups.
