Faced with the depletion of the therapeutic arsenal available to us, the search for new families of ligands in complexed form with different metals has become a new approach in the design of new therapeutic agents. This work explores an innovative path: the reworking of carboxylic polyether ionophores through metal complexation and/or structural modification. Through the synthesis and detailed characterization of new complexes and derivatives based on calcimycin, lasalocid, and monensin, this first volume lays the foundations for an alternative strategy based on the possible engineering of ionophores to make them therapeutic candidates adapted to contemporary challenges.
