Seit der legendaren, fruh mit Kaiserin Helena in Verbindung gebrachten Auffindung des Passionskreuzes Christi in Jerusalem gehoren Reliquien des sog. 'wahren' Kreuzes zu den heilsgeschichtlich bedeutendsten Objekten der Christenheit. Gegenstand des vorliegenden Buches ist die faszinierende Geschichte dieser in Byzanz und im Abendland gleichermassen hochverehrten Reliquie, wie sie sich aufgrund der erhaltenen Quellen fur die bereits in konstantinischer Zeit etablierten Kultzentren Jerusalem, Konstantinopel und Rom sowie - von dort ausgehend - fur das gesamte christliche Abendland rekonstruieren lasst. Weitere Untersuchungsschwerpunkte bilden die kunstlerische Entwicklung der zur Aufbewahrung von Kreuzreliquien angefertigten Reliquiare sowie die Frage nach den historischen Voraussetzungen und kunstlerischen Implikationen der Verbreitung byzantinischer Kreuzreliquiare im Abendland. Im Mittelpunkt des kunst- und kulturhistorischen Interesses stehen dabei vor allem Werke, deren Translations- und/oder Rezeptionsgeschichte aufgrund historischer Quellen bzw. anhand der Objekte selbst rekonstruiert werden kann. Den Ausgangspunkt bilden hier zunachst jene Reliquiare, deren liturgische und zeremonielle Verwendung schon fruh fur Jerusalem, Konstantinopel, Apameia und Rom nachgewiesen werden kann. Diesen nur aus der literarischen Uberlieferung bekannten kasten- und kreuzformigen Reliquiaren werden solche gegenubergestellt, deren ursprungliche Funktion aufgrund ihres unspezifischen Ausseren nicht mit Sicherheit bestimmt werden kann. Auf die Analyse der fruhesten erhaltenen byzantinischen und abendlandischen Kreuzreliquiare folgt zuletzt die systematische Analyse der Typologie, Kult- und Rezeptionsgeschichte byzantinischer Kreuzreliquiare vom Ende des Bilderstreits bis ins fruhe 15. Jahrhundert.

"Eine große Stärke der Arbeit ist, dass sie sich nicht allein auf die Behandlung der Stücke bzw. der Kreuzverehrung beschränkt, sondern beispielsweise auch die Geschichte der kunsthistorischen Byzanzforschung und deren wechselvolle Urteile zur östlichen Kunst in den Blick nimmt. Alleine dies ist schon prägnanter und lesenswerter, als sonst manche ganz Dissertation. In der Gesamtstruktur entwirft Klein eine Geschichte des byzantinischen Kreuzreliquiars und seiner Rezeption im Westen auf der Grundlage einer umfassenden Besprechung der überlieferten Stücke, ihres materiellen Bestandes wie ihrer Ikonographie und Programmatik. Er arbeitet methodisch reflektiert nahe an den Stücken und den Schriftquellen, die souverän gehandhabt werden. Sicherlich mögen insbesondere zu der Geschichte der Kreuzauffindung und der Kreuzverehrung wie auch zu einzelnen Stücken Nachträge möglich sein, die Gesamtaussage und den bleibenden Wert des Buches beeinträchtigt dies nicht. Es ist eine beeindruckende Leistung, zu der dem Autor und der renommierten Reihe, in der es erschienen ist, zu gratulieren."

"This book focuses on the reliquaries of the true cross in Byzantium and their reception in the West. It starts with a brief historiographic survey followed by a synopsis of the cult of the true cross in Jerusalem, Constantinople, Rome, and the West and then proceeds with a catalogue, dividing the objects into three parts: Byzantine reliquaries, Western reliquaries before the Fourth Crusade, and Western reliquaries after the capture of Constantinople in 1204. Klein's originality rests in his analysis and recontruction of the form of the Donauwörther "Staurothek"; the Western reworking of the reliquaries at Fonte Avellana, Nonantola, and Esztergom; and the Byzantine winged reliquaries at the Lateran, the Hermitage, and the monastery of Marienstern. For Marienstern the author offers a new and extensive recontruction of the iconographic program. Excellent discussion and recontruction are given for the cross reliquary at St. Matthias in Trier and at St. Petrus in Mettlach, both copying the form of the Limburg "Staurothek". In all cases, the bibliography is extensive - a synthesis of the existing scholarship in the field. The analysis stays with the question of form and iconography. All the inscriptions are given in the original Greek and Latin and then translated into German. This attention to the primary sources is welcome. The Greek has some mistakes, so Frolow's publication of the inscriptions remains authoritative. At the same time, the vast survey of primary sources discussing the crusader entry and pillage of Constantinople in 1204 offers an excellent presentation of the material.
Overall, the strengths of this book lie in its formal and iconographic analysis, synthesis of existing scholarship and primary sources, exhaustive photographic assembly of images, and introduction to the reception of Byzantine reliquaries in the West.

"Among the relics (usually fragments of saints' bones), the dominical relics enjoy a privileged position, and among these (including the nails with which the Lord was crucified, thorns from the crown of thrones, etc.), fragments of the true cross have become the most prominent ones. Klein's monumental thesis begins with a major chapter on the veneration of relics of the true cross in the East, Rome, and Western Europe, in order then t odeal with his avtual subject: reliquaries. While the subject is well known among medieval art historians, the relevant material has never been catalogued and analyzed as detailed as it is done here. Special attention is paid to the question of how the presence of Byzantine relics led to new artistic developments in the West. Byzantine style is often "quoted" in the interest of authenticating a given relic. Encyclopedic in scope, this is a major contribution to the reception of Eastern art forms in the West."

Holger A. Klein studierte Kunstgeschichte, Christliche Archäologie und Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft in Freiburg im Breisgau, München, London (Courtauld Institute of Art) und Bonn. Nach Stipendien am Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies in Washington, D.C. (1998/99), dem Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (1999) und dem Walters Art Museum in Baltimore (1999/2000) zunächst für vier Jahre als Assistant Professor an der Columbia University in New York tätig, leitet er seit 2004 als Robert P. Bergman Curator of Medieval Art die Mittelalter- und Byzanzabteilung am Cleveland Museum of Art. Forschungs- und Lehrtätigkeit im Bereich der mittelalterlichen und byzantinischen Kunstgeschichte.
