Marriage was instituted by God when He observed that it is not good that the man should be alone, and which is why He said that He would make him a help meet for him (Genesis 2:18). The creation of Adam was declared by God to be good. Adam was a whole person, and as a man he was made perfect, fresh from God's creative hands. Woman was made a unique divine creation, perfect as a woman. As an individual Adam was made perfect but incomplete in that he needed companionship and help which only the woman, Eve, could provide for him. The union of these two completed the wholeness that separately they did not have as individuals. A Christian marriage is a spiritual and physical relationship of companionship, closeness, intimacy, and equality. Having reproduced children the partners in marriage are required of God to be nourished physically and spiritually and to be taught the Word of God is ideally provided for through marriage. This implies that parents are God's provision for children. Only from their parents can they most learn fully about deep, abiding love and commitment and be prepared to seek it for themselves.
